Preparing for 2026 Changes to Charitable Contribution Deductions

Starting in 2026, the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 2021 (OBBBA) shifts the landscape for philanthropic tax planning. These adjustments will significantly alter how individuals claim charitable deductions.

New Deduction Rules for 2026

If you itemize, the upcoming rules introduce a 0.5% Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) contribution floor. You may only write off the portion of your charitable giving exceeding 0.5% of your AGI, which could limit the tax benefit of smaller donations.

Conversely, standard deduction filers will receive a specific tax break. Non-itemizers can deduct cash contributions up to $1,000 for single taxpayers and $2,000 for joint filers.
